KSO season announced; single tickets on sale Aug. 13

The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra's 2012-13 season begins Sept. 20 with performances of Rachmaninoff, Brahms, Copland and a work by KSO Music Director Lucas Richman as the Symphony launches its Moxley-Carmichael Masterworks Series. Prior to that, the KSO and Clarence Brown Theatre again collaborate, presenting 14 performances of "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street."

This season's offerings will include the Masterworks, Pops, Chamber series, the annual Clayton Holiday Concerts and a new Concertmaster Series featuring Concertmaster Gabriel Lefkowitz. Single tickets to all KSO events go on sale Aug. 13 and may be purchased by calling the KSO Box Office, 865-291-3310.

All eight masterworks concerts will be performed at the Tennessee Theatre on Thursday and Friday evenings at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Richman. The masterworks series includes:

n Ravishing Rachmaninoff, Sept. 20-21, with Orion Weiss on piano;

n Candide, Oct. 18-19 with the Knoxville Chamber Chorale;

n Brahms'Symphony No. 4, Nov. 15-16, with Gabriel Lefkowitz on violin;

n Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto, Jan. 24-25, with Gleb Ivanov on piano;

n Romance of the Violin, Feb. 21-22, with Brittany Sklar on violin;

n Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez, March 21-22, with Ana Vidovic on guitar;

n Verdi Requiem, April 18-19, with Knoxville Choral Society;

n The Rite of Spring, May 16-17, with Inbal Segev on cello.

The News Sentinel Pops series features light classics, pop and Broadway tunes. All four pops concerts will be performed at the Civic Auditorium at 8 p.m. Saturdays. They include:

n Music of Lennon & McCartney, Jan. 19, James Fellenbaum, conductor;

n Ann Hampton Callaway: The Streisand Songbook, March 16;

n Doc Severinsen: Italian Style, April 13;

n Jim Brickman, May 11.

The Chamber Classics series features a smaller group of musicians performing classical music in the more intimate setting of the Bijou Theatre. Concerts take place on Sunday afternoons at 2:30 p.m.

n Beethoven Symphony No. 1, Nov. 4, Cathy Leach, trumpet;

n Hail Britannia, Jan. 13;

n Music for the Royal Fireworks, March 3, Gabriel Lefkowitz, violin;

n Principal Quartet Plays Beethoven, April 7, Gordon Tsai, Edward Pulgar, violin; Kathryn Gawne, viola; Andy Bryenton, cello;

n American Masters, May 5.

The 27th annual KSO Clayton Holiday Concert will be Dec. 14 and 15 at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium. The KSO will be joined by the Knoxville Choral Society, Sound Company Children's Choir and other special guests.

A new "Concertmaster Series: Gabriel Lefkowitz & Friends" will be held at Remedy Coffee in the Old City on select Wednesdays and Thursdays. Lefkowitz and fellow musicians will play and talk to the audience during these "up close and personal" performances. They will be held Oct. 3-4, Jan. 16-17 and March 13-14.
