He's moving on.
Knoxville native and Webb School graduate Greer Mackebee scored a come-from-behind win to make it through Monday night's quarterfinal round on the "Jeopardy!" College Championship, and he will be a semifinalist in an upcoming episode.
The Duke University senior started well - correctly answering three of the first four questions - but then fell behind to both of his competitors, Marie McGraw (a senior at M.I.T.) and Sarah Bauer (a junior at Indiana University). He was playing catch up the rest of the game and was in third place, but within striking distance, for the final round. Before that last round, Mackebee had $10,400 compared to Bauer's $12,400 and McGraw's $12,900.
In the final category of "Colonial History," Mackebee's correctly responded, "Who are Mason and Dixon?" to the the answer: "A 1763 letter said these two men were equipped with 'instruments to look at the posts in the line for 10 to 12 miles.'" He wagered $7,600 to push his total to $18,000.
Bauer and McGraw both incorrectly guessed "Who are Lewis and Clark?" and dropped to $8,800 and $10,900, respectively.
Mackebee was a 2008 graduate of Webb School and is the son of Farragut residents Bill and Betty Mackebee. He was a varsity tennis player at Webb, and as it happens, on Monday's "Jeopardy!" show he correctly identified Kevlar as a material used in tennis racket strings
The tournament was recorded in early January at the Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, Calif. The championship will air through Feb. 14. "Jeopardy!" airs locally on WBIR, Channel 10, at 7:30 p.m. weeknights
