Knoxville named most romantic city in the U.S. by Amazon.com

Looking for a romantic getaway for Valentine’s Day?

Well stay put, Knoxville: Amazon.com has declared our fair town the most romantic city in the United States.

The online retailer based its declaration on sales data of romantic comedy movies (DVDS and digital movies), Barry White CDs and MP3s, relationship books and romance novels (print as well as Kindle Books) and “sexual wellness” products. The tallies cover sales since January 1, on a per capita basis in cities with more than 100,000 residents.

In an announcement made Thursday, Amazon.com said Knoxville has been surging in the romance department, climbing 14 spots to No. 2 in the 2011 rankings (earning us the “most improved" designation last year) and this year wresting away the No. 1 spot from Alexandria, Va. Alexandria drops to No. 2 after enjoying two years at the top.

The rest of the Top 5 are, in order, Springfield, Mo., Orlando, Fla., and Cincinnati. Other Tennessee cities in the Top 20 are Murfreesboro (No. 8) and Clarksville (No. 15).

Miami came in at No. 7 and was also declared the “sexiest city in America” for the third year in a row, by virtue of its top ranking in the sexual wellness category.

And America’s least romantic city, according to Amazon.com: New York City.
