The Watson family's house is torn down on the second day of filming "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" in West Knoxville on Jan. 11, 2012.
TV put a twist on the demolition Wednesday of Daniel and Mandy Watson's two-story house on Robinson Road in West Knoxville.
As volunteers cheered, hammed it up and then cheered again for the cameras, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" crews staged and filmed a tear-down that apparently is going to involve a little electronic trickery. You'll have to wait for the program's airing in November, but it sounds like a giant monster call "TurkZilla" may end up destroying the house.
The Watsons and their three children headed off Wednesday for a Florida vacation that's hopefully drier than East Tennessee. Mud and near constant rain have posed a challenge for the folks helping out at the home construction site.
Project spokeswoman Cynthia Moxley said the build needs lumber donations. To donate and to check out what else is needed, go to the website of lead builder Grace Construction, www.grace-info.com.

I liked the old farmhouse. I wish they had made an an effort to renovate and save it. Was that considered or does Extreme Makeover always demolish and rebuild?

I'm sure they considered it, but the condition of the house would make renovation an extended project. They took portions of the house that could be rehabilitated for other homes and salvaged it in the process. I hope they take elements of the old home and incorporate it into the new one. I noticed they took the Victorian lattice work on the eaves b/c they were not there when the house was torn down.

I'm sure this family is well deserving of this and I mean no disrespect but could you imagine if all this effort was spread out more evenly thoughout the community. 3000 volunteers is WAY more than needed to complete this job. As I watched some of this unfold on TV, I saw dozens of people just standing around watching, made me wonder if the goverment is running this show.
