With "Glee," "American Horror Story," "nip/tuck" and (of course) Knoxville News Sentinel reporter to his credits, Ryan Murphy is now going into business with NBC.
The former Knoxville journalist is behind a new comedy pilot called "The New Normal," which focuses on a blended family of a gay couple and the woman who becomes a surrogate for them as they grow their family.
Murphy will direct the pilot. Andrew Randalls ("The Book of Mormon") will star as one of the three leads, the Hollywood Reporter's piece on the project says.
This is Murphy's first half-hour comedy and should it be ordered to series, mark his fourth project on the air behind "Glee," its Oxygen reality spinoff "The Glee Project" and FX's anthology thriller "American Horror Story."
Murphy was a reporter for the News Sentinel while he was in college. He wrote a local lifestyles column that ran on the front page.
nSpooky. Farragut High School graduate Ben Garant has written a supernatural movie that will begin shooting in March.
"Jessabellem" is "about a girl who is forced to return to her father's home in Louisiana when a car accident leaves her without the use of both her legs.
"What she finds there is a mystery surrounding her own birth and an angry ghost (named Jessabellem) that seems determined to destroy her," according to bloodydisgusting.com.
"Saw VI" and "Saw 3D" director Kevin Greutert is supposed to direct.
Garant is best known for his role as Deputy Junior on Comedy Central's "Reno 911!" His writing credits include "Night at the Museum" and its sequel (both of which he appeared in, too).
The film is expected in theaters either by the end of 2012 or in 2013.
nSuper Bowl. Knoxville native Colby Woodlandis the art director for two commercials that will be shown during the Super Bowl on Sunday night.
One commercial is for Budweiser Beer and the other is for Hyundai Auto. Both are scheduled to be presented at the beginning of game play.
Woodland graduated from Central High School and the University of Tennessee.
He and his wife, Susie Woodland, live in Los Angeles these days.
nQuips. Usually Knoxville native Christina Hendricks (of "Mad Men" fame)has fashion mavens all aglow — but not this time.
On a recent edition of "Fashion Police" with Joan Rivers, she was a cast out.
A photo shown on the show revealed Hendricks wearing a pullover sweater with a wolf's head on front and a furry hat with splashes of red all over it.
"I think her hat is still bleeding," quipped Rivers after seeing the photo of Hendricks bundled up at T-Mobile's Google music night at Tao in Park City.
