Terry Morrow: 'Twilight' appeal doesn't escape Teen Choice voters

Trying to understand the phenomenal appeal of the "Twilight" saga still perplexes its cast and creator — even after millions of books sold and nearly a half-dozen movies made.

"All the credit goes back to the characters and the books," says Taylor Lautner, who plays werewolf Jacob Black in the film series. "It's where it all started. We're all extremely honored to be in a situation to bring those to life."

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1" is a major nominee at the 2012 Teen Choice Awards, including a nod for Teen Choice Movie and several notices for its acting cast.

The ceremony airs live at 8 p.m. Sunday on Fox. Winners are determined by fans ages 13 to 19, who may vote online once a day for their favorites.

No Doubt, Flo Rida and DJ Pauly D are scheduled to perform. Presenters represent a who's who in the world of teen appeal, such as Dax Shepard, Jordin Sparks, Selena Gomez and Victoria Justice.

Categories include Choice Movie Actor: Romance, Choice Male Voice, Choice Movie Liplock and Choice Movie Hissy Fit.

So, no, this isn't exactly the Academy Awards.

But in some ways it's just as important as it indicates what's popular with a heavy pop culture demographic, especially among females.

In the Choice Movie category, "Twilight" faces off against "The Lucky One," "Think Like A Man," "This Means War" and "The Vow."

As for the success — almost obsession — with "Twilight," "The characters in the books is what appeals to (fans)," Lautner says. "I don't know if it's how they relate to them or what. I have no idea."

SUNDAY

— "3" (9 p.m. CBS). In this new search-for-love series, three women of various ages are followed as they look for Mr. Right.

MONDAY

— "Squidbillies" (12:15 a.m. Adult Swim). A new season spreads out for this tale of redneck hillbilly sea creatures living in the Georgia mountains.

— "RAW" (8 p.m. USA Network). The brawny wrestling show airs its 1,000th episode. Impressed now, "Meet The Press"?

— "Bachelor Pad" (8 p.m. ABC). Past "Bachelor" contestants and their fans compete in this "Big Brother"-contest.

— "Alphas" (10 p.m. SyFy). A second season opens for the story of ordinary people coming to terms with their superhuman abilities.

TUESDAY

— "Trust Us With Your Life" (9 p.m. ABC). Moments from Jerry Springer's life are recreated by comedians in this improv game.

WEDNESDAY

— "The Middle" (8 p.m. ABC). In one of last season's funnier episodes, the family looks for a new home because their current one is in such bad shape.

FRIDAY

— "Summer Olympics: Opening Ceremony" (8 p.m. NBC). Let the games begin, live from London. Organizers say 1,000 performers will add to the event (only a few will be televised). A worldwide audience of 1 billion is expected to witness it.

SATURDAY

— "Summer Olympics" (8 p.m. NBC). Highlights include men's gymnastics and beach volleyball.
