You've had 49 years to know your Avengers. If you're going to "The Avengers" movie today and don't know your green-skinned Hulk from Black Widow, we've got your recap right here.
In comics
- The Avengers comic book launched in 1963 and was an instant success. The original members for this assemblage of Marvel Comics heroes included Iron Man (in a gold-plated suit of armor), Thor, the green-skinned Hulk and lesser characters Ant-Man and Wasp.
Since then, the group has gone through dozens of members and spin-off teams (Secret Avengers and New Avengers being among the current ones).
The main team's crew includes a red-skinned Hulk (a different creature altogether), a higher-tech Iron Man and Captain America.
The Avengers joined forces because they figured their combined powers could do the world some good.
In the movies
- "The Avengers" is a collection of heroes who have starred in their own films in recent years. That line-up consists of Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, the green-skinned Hulk and lower-profile heroes Black Widow and Hawkeye (she was in the "Iron Man" movies; He was in "Thor.").
The Black Widow is an agent with uncanny fighting skills. Hawkeye is the world's most-skilled archer (with the girl from "The Hunger Games" not withstanding).
These Avengers came together because of a military order.
