Damian Lewis of "Homeland" has a good shot at an Emmy on Sunday night.

The 2012 Primetime Emmys will be getting its own British invasion.

The across-the-pond and across-the-board hit "Downton Abbey" is a major contender this year, taking 16 nominations, the second-most nods of any series in this year's race.

Leading nominees — with 17 apiece — are "Mad Men" on AMC and "American Horror Story" on FX, a creation of former News Sentinel reporter Ryan Murphy.

History's "Hatfields & McCoys" miniseries tied with "Downton Abbey" for the second-most nominations. "Game of Thrones," "Homeland," "Modern Family" and "Sherlock" have also garnered lots of Emmy appreciation.

Who may win?

Comedy Series. "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (HBO); "Girls" (HBO); "30 Rock" (NBC); "Veep" (HBO); "Modern Family" (ABC); and "The Big Bang Theory" (CBS).

Who may win. "Modern Family" because the Television Arts and Sciences voting members LOVE this show.

Drama Series. "Boardwalk Empire" (HBO); "Breaking Bad" (AMC); "Downton Abbey" (PBS); "Mad Men" (AMC); "Homeland" (Showtime); "Game Of Thrones" (HBO).

Who may win. "Downton Abbey" has tremendous momentum going for it.

Other races. Damian Lewis may pick up the trophy for leading actor in "Homeland." Hugh Bonneville of "Downton Abbey" has an excellent chance at this category, too, but I'll go with Lewis.

The same can be said of Claire Danes ("Homeland") and Michelle Dockery ("Downton Abbey"). I'm giving it to Danes.

In comedy, I'll go with Jim Parsons ("Big Bang Theory") and Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("Veep").

The Emmys air live 8 p.m. Sunday on WATE, Channel 6.
