The hike then makes a steep descent that loses approximately 1000 feet of altitude in the first 1.5 miles.

Hikers beginning at Big Fat Gap will travel along the Big Fat Gap and Slickrock Creek Trails before reaching the falls which feature deep plunge pools.

A few sections of loose rock can make for tricky hiking in wet weather.

September's hike of the month follows the Big Fat Gap and Slickrock Creek Trails to Wildcat Falls in the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness Area near Robbinsville, N.C.
