Austin-East High School is a public, coeducational college-preparatory grade 9-12 high school. The school was originally known as Austin High School. It was also originally called East High School.
In 1967, the students of the all-black Austin High moved to all-white East High to form the integrated Austin-East High. The current Austin-East High School building itself was constructed in 1951.
Years later, in 1997, the school became a magnet school for performing arts, science and math. The school-within-a-school magnet program allows students the opportunity for advanced preparation with a more challenging curriculum.
Students at the four-year high school can study dance, orchestra, theater, vocal and instrumental music, television broadcasting, professional editing and documentary production, finance and business and more.
Incorporated into the educational model are school-to-career opportunities, business mentors and paid internships.
Austin-East High School is at 2800 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. in East Knoxville, south of Interstate 40 and in close proximity to Broadway Avenue, Asheville Highway and downtown Knoxville.
Austin-East High School is attended by approximately 850 students. Its feeder middle schools are Carter, Holston, South Doyle, Vine and Whittle Springs.
Austin-East also hosts ROTC and is one of two Project GRAD high schools in Knox County.
Students can participate in sports such as basketball, baseball, cheerleading, football, softball, track and field, volleyball and wrestling.
The school mascot is the roadrunner.
