To call Big Fatty's strictly a soul-food restaurant would be misleading. It does serve items such as turnip greens, fried okra and pinto beans, and on Saturdays it might whip up a fried chicken or barbecue blue-plate dinner.
The salad section, for example, has everything from meat-topped greens to the Happy Fatty - wild greens topped with mangos, blue cheese, pecans and chicken.
In the between-the-buns realm, Big Fatty's offers veggie and tofu sandwiches and black bean burgers for vegans/vegetarians. Meat lovers can choose from shrimp or crab cake po' boys, specialty sandwiches and chicken sandwiches prepared with any of five different seasonings and sauces. Likewise, the half-pound burgers come with multiple cheese and topping options.
Blue-plate dinners vary nightly, ranging from Monday's meat loaf to Friday's pot roast. Saturday's offerings change weekly, and on the Saturday we stopped in, the special was a chicken salad hoagie stacked with bacon, lettuce and tomato. The Spouse chose that for dinner, along with fried okra as a side dish.
