Excerpt from 2006 Grub Scout review of Fleming's:

Visually, the abundance of dark woodwork and accent moldings on the walls sets the tone for a space that conveys upscale steakhouse atmosphere without appearing stuffy or dated.

At this national restaurant chain, food and wine go hand in hand - in fact, two-thirds of the menu is devoted to a comprehensive wine selection - so we approached our ordering strategy accordingly. Our server assisted us in pairing a wine with each dish.

The median price range for a glass of wine at Fleming's is about $8-$12, so in the interest of both economy and sobriety, we chose a small flight of wine samples - each costing roughly a third of the regular price.

Several appetizers jumped out at us, including the tenderloin carpaccio in caper Creole mustard sauce and the breaded calamari tossed in sweet chile sauce. A neighboring table enjoyed a hefty but attractive lobster tempura as a starter. We chose the smoked Norwegian salmon bruschetta, which our server matched up with the L'Ecole sauvignon blanc.

For the main course, steak was a no-brainer, so I went with the 12-ounce filet mignon paired with a Schug merlot. The Spouse chose the Australian lamb chops and, at our server's suggestion, a sampling of St. Supery cabernet.

Other entree options include rib eyes, New York strips, veal and pork chops, several seafood dishes and the tempting beef Flemington, a filet wrapped in a puff pastry with a mushroom duxelle and madeira sauce.
