Laurel High School

Laurel High School is a small high school in the Fort Sanders neighborhood that offers students an alternative education. The school is located in a red brick home at 1539 Laurel Avenue. Its setting makes it easy to get to from downtown, the University of Tennessee campus, Interstate 40 or Alcoa Highway.

Laurel High School opened in 1975. The school can at present accommodate up to 30 students. The school’s administration is considering moving to a larger location to increase enrollment and curriculum offerings.

Laurel High is designed for students who have difficulty fitting into traditional public schools. Students are invited to find what they love doing and engage in those pursuits.

Students have a hand in developing their own curriculum. Class schedules are flexible and allow for a wide variety of academic, creative and vocational classes.

Course offerings include mathematics, English, foreign language (German, French, Spanish, Latin and American Sign Language), science, history, social studies (including psychology, philosophy, world religions and sociology), computers, music, wellness and arts/crafts/multimedia. Practical skills such as carpentry, auto mechanics, sewing, cooking and computer construction are also available for study.

Students are also encouraged to meet with professionals who are actively engaged in their prospective career choices. Students also participate in community outreach to help them foster a sense of social responsibility.
