Powell High School is a public, coeducational college-preparatory grade 9-12 high school at 2136 W. Emory Road in the Powell community in North Knoxville. The school can be reached by Clinton Highway and Interstate 75.


Powell High School was built in 1948. The school was renovated in 1985. Three new classrooms were completed on the west end of the Powell campus in 2008. One classroom is dedicated to a new cosmetology classroom and features space for both lectures and lab work, with space for haircuts and sinks for shampoos. The second classroom is a new computer lab; the third is a learning center. An additional eight classrooms are planned to be added by the end of the 2009-2010 school year.


Powell High School is attended by approximately 1,250 students. Its feeder middle schools are Gresham, Northwest and Powell.


Powell is a comprehensive high school. The school offers several Advanced Placement courses in several subject areas, including art history, Calculus BC, European history, Physics C: mechanics, statistics and U.S. history. Students can also take three foreign languages and arts classes such as studio art and visual art.


Like Karns High School, students from Powell can take courses at the Byington-Solway Career and Technical Education Center, which is located eight miles away at 2700 Byington Solway Road in Karns. This Career-Technical Education was built in 1976. Students can take a wide variety of career and technical education programs such as engineering, welding, Web design, cosmetology, marketing and more.


Powell students can participate in sports such as baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. The school mascot is the panther.
