Karns High School is a public, coeducational college-preparatory grade 9-12 high school at 2710 Byington Solway Road in the Karns community of Knoxville. It is in proximity of Oak Ridge Highway, W. Emory Road, Middlebrook Pike and Lovell Road.
The first Karns High School building opened in 1913. A second Karns High was built in 1938. The current building was constructed in 1981. The school is named in honor of T.C. Karns, an early Superintendent of Public Instruction of Knox County. Karns High School is attended by approximately 1,500 students. Its feeder middle schools are Bearden, Karns, Northwest and Powell.
Karns is a comprehensive high school. The school offers several Advanced Placement courses in 13 subject areas, including European history, government & economics, calculus, biology, chemistry, environmental science and studio art. Students can also take three foreign languages and arts classes such as ceramics, painting and sculpture.
Karns High School is adjacent to the Byington-Solway Career and Technical Education Center, which is located at 2700 Byington Solway Road. Built in 1976, this Career-Technical Education is available to students from both Karns and Powell high schools. Students can take a wide variety of career and technical education programs such as criminal justice, welding, web design, marketing and more.
Students at Karns can participate in sports such as baseball, basketball, soccer, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. The school mascot is the beaver.
