West End Academy is a private, coeducational college-preparatory grade 5-12 school located at 5311 McKamey Road in West Knoxville, north of Middlebrook Pike, south of Clinton Highway and west of Interstate 640.
West End Academy was founded in 1971 as a tutorial service for elementary and high school students. Its day school began in 1975. Approximately 110 students will attend the school during a calendar year. School policy allows for admission at any time during the year. West End Academy also offers summer school and after-school tutoring.
West End Academy specializes in “educational recovery: reclaiming and making successful the lives of children who enroll in West End Academy, after they have experienced failure and frustration in other venues.” The school provides a state-approved curriculum leading to a high school diploma. About 80 percent of the school’s students go on to college.
The school has a low student/teacher radio (approximately 15:1), extended class periods and provides individualized instruction. Each student has an individualized educational plan. West End is fully accredited and approved by the State of Tennessee. The school offers a “family friendly homework schedule” and provides rewards and incentives for academic progress.
West End Academy is loosely a Christian school. Bible classes are taught weekly but are not mandatory. The school is not affiliated with any denomination.
Enrollment is based on a written application and interview. Tuition is paid monthly and is based on when a student is admitted. Yearly tuition for the 2008-2009 school year was $7,025. Financial aid is available based on factors such as family size, medical expenses, ability to pay and number of wage earners in the family.
