Biography
Mike Griffith is in his 14th year with the Knoxville News Sentinel and has served as the primary Tennessee men's basketball beat writer the past six years. He covered the Vols' football beat from 1998 through the 2005 season and currently writes on the Scripps Legends Top 25 college football poll as well as voting on the Harris BCS Top 25 Poll, the Heisman Trophy and selecting the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-American team, which he founded in 2001. Mike was President of the FWAA in 2007, and has given induction speeches at the College Football Hall of Fame on two occasions on behalf of FWAA members, as well as presenting two Nagurski Awards at the Charlotte Touchdown Club's annual event.
A 1991 graduate of Michigan State University (B.A., Journalism), Mike has worked at the Lansing (Mi.) State Journal, The Idaho Falls Post Register, the Anniston (Ala.) Star and the Mobile Register. He has won regional and national awards over the past 20 years for News Reporting, Feature Writing, Enterprise Reporting, Game Stories and Investigative Reporting. Mike's beats included football and basketball at Idaho State, Auburn and Alabama, and he also covers UT's women's softball team and NASCAR for the News Sentinel.
In addition to his newspaper work, Mike is a regular correspondent for WVLT-8 sports and has co-hosted the Sunday night "Locker Room'' show with Mark Packer the past five years. Mike also co-hosts the News Sentinel's "Sports Page'' radio show on the Sports Animal (99.1 FM, 990 AM) and handles the University of Tennessee previews in the Athlon preseason football and basketball publications.
