Written on Wayne Bledsoe: Songwriting great Mickey Newbury finally gets his due :

Thanks, GreggO! Yeah, that may be the best line among a bunch of good ones in "Just Dropped In." I interviewed Mickey years ago and he told me that that song was very much what he experienced on a bad acid trip outside of Memphis just like the song says. Here's a link to a version of Mickey singing it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGGiWu.... The tone is a lot different than when Kenny Rogers did it.

Written on Mary Gauthier's search for her birth mother brought something other than closure:

Thanks, Earl. Mary is always so nice to talk with and it was really good to hear her sound so happy. I'm anxious to hear what she comes up with next.

Written on Idolizers: ET fans sing praises of Adam Lambert at Tennessee Theatre show:

in response to trollhair:

Where was the advertising on this? I didn't see anything in the paper nor did I receive a email. I wouldn't have gone, but that is not the point....whenever we have someone come to Knoxville, it is mentioned in the paper AFTER the event not BEFORE.

cjones is right....Lambert is the new drama "queen".

Trollhair,
He was on the cover of our entertainment section, Knoxville.com, on July 2 (also on this Website), and we had an piece when the concert was first announced. There wasn't a lot of advertising, because the show sold out quickly.

Written on Literary Knoxville: 'The Road' film wins McCarthy's approval, but will it sell? :

in response to demonicstrawberry:

Next few weeks?! Why the heck isn't it coming out on November 25th when it, you know, actually opens!? Grrr...

It was originally scheduled to open wide, including Knoxville, on Nov. 25, but the movie company has switched to a softer release strategy. I suspect they want the critical buzz to carry it to the smaller cities - although, while I liked it very much, reviews have been mixed. No word now on when we'll get it, but surely soon.

Written on Bledsoe: What that song really is or isn't about :

in response to Oz_the_wise:

Well, my contribution to your article is the song "Lola" by the Kinks that the local classic rock station loves to play so much is about a romantic encounter between the singer and a transvestite.

Oz,

That's one of my favorite songs. It doesn't seem so mysterious these days as when it first came out. I never found any evidence of it, but Ray Davies said the song was "banned from Knoxville radio" when it came out. I don't remember hearing it on the radio until a couple of years after it was released and then (I think) it was on W-149 - the short-lived album rock station. I DO remember hearing "Apeman" from the same album when it came out.

Written on The Boss, Phish to headline Bonnaroo 2009:

in response to jennl:

Nine years of bonnaroo? I count only seven years and this year's festival will be number eight.

Noted and corrected. Much thanks!

Written on Bledsoe: 'Crying Light' is worth dropping prejudices :

Thanks, Earl. I gotta tell you, though. I actually like Tiny Tim .... more so for the baritone stuff than the falsetto, though.

Written on Bledsoe: Great acoustics weren't the only joys of memorable Bijou shows:

in response to earlofsandwich:

What a wonderfully written article. I enjoyed it immensely. The Bijou and the Tennessee two of Knoxville's best treasures. I've enjoyed many shows at the Bijou, but none before the current renovation. I especially enjoyed hearing about a number of performances that stood out for you.

Thanks, Earl. There have been lots of others, but those are ones that came to mind easily. I'd like to hear which ones stood out for you.
