You're so right about the shortage of happy songs. Here's a few not mentioned: "I'm so Glad" - Cream"How Happy I Am" - Incredible String Band"Let Me Sing & I'm Happy"- Al Jolson"Happy Little World" - Chuck BrodskyListen to and Incan music, music from the Andes - i.e. Inca Son, Los Caballeros, very uplifting.Oh, and the saddest - "Orphan Train" written by David Massengill but listen to the version by Tom Russell
Whoa! another wonderful review ( has there ever been one not well done?)and if I hadn't just seen this group 3 weeks ago in San Francisco ( Hardly Strictly Bluegrass)I'd be buying thier music based on this interview. Wonderful band, excellent article ( again)
I've read a number of reviews of this album by other people, Wayne. I've already bought the album and love it. But, as usual nobody does a review or describes a pieceof music better than you do. I wish there were a collection of your reviews in one place.
I think I'm correct when saying that Hendrix only had 3 albums released while he was alive. Also, the Steve Stills project would be interesting. The first Stills solo album has both Clapton & Hendrix on it. excellent album

Another excellent piece on a great artist, Wayne. Mary Gauthier is one of the top singer/songwriters out there today. Thanks for a well written story.
Billy Joe one of my faves. I saw him in Calif @ Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, but missed him when he played at a campground outside Newport a couple years ago. He's an amazing person and an interesting life. Great article.
Thank you for this article. I was unfamiliar with Howard Armstrong. I want to learn more.Your articles are always so well written and informative!
Excellent article!! I used to spend lots of time in Cleveland, OH and got to know Robert Lockwood Jr ( he told me he was Robert Lockwood Jr, not Robert Jr) and Wallace Coleman, and Maurice, and Red, and all the members of The Blues All Stars real well. They were all nice people. Robert was nice if he'd had a few drinks.Anyway, Wallace Coleman is an excellent harmonica player and I love watching and hearing him play. One of the best around and a link to all those great blues players no longer with us.
Such a well written article I had to look, I expected it had been done by Wayne. Anyway, it's just a shame that it's taken 40 years and a nod from Neil Young before someone of the caliber of Bert Jansch gets noticed by the general public. The other guitarist mentioned in the article, John Renbourn, is an equally gifted guitarist as well.
Great story. I bought Exile when it first came out and still have all the little post cards, etc that came with the album. One of my favorite rock albums of all time.
Excellent review, wayne. Thanks so much.
Sounds like a great festival. Clarksdale is certainly the mecca of American music. Bessie Smith died there, and so many blues musicians, Muddy Waters,John Hurt, and many others came from the area.Someone really needs to expose the myth of Robert Johnson and the crossroads. Also, Honeyboy saying he was with Robert when he died is fabricated.
I admit, I loved her first album a lot. Right up there for album of the year. I have not been as enthralled with the stuff she's done since then. I certainly wish her well and hope she'll continue in the music biz.
Another excellent, outstanding, informative, and entertaining review of a truly phenomenal band. I lost touch with them after the early 70's and don't know anything about their latres 70's or MTV success, but the early Moody Blues were great and I loved the article.
Wayne, excellent review as usual. Excellent album as well from RB. Great to hear your thoughts on it.
An album I did not, and would not have known, existed. Excellent review and I will try to give it a listen. I wonder if Phil Ochs ever had a stable mental condition?
Wayne,
I always value your record reviews. You tell it like it is. Excellent reviews and always look forward to hearing what you have to say.
Thank you for printing this article. The notion of RJ seeling his soul to the devil has been exposed as a hoax by numerous blues authors yet people still want it to persist because it's good for tourism. Don Law who recorded RJ noted that he hid his guitar but because he was so shy ( in the presence of whites). Also, his original death cert listed syphillis as the cause of death. So much has been fabricated.
Excellent article and he really comes across as the super nice guy that he is.I just saw him a couple of weeks ago in San Francisco with his large band and he was awesome. He followed John Prine and J P played a song with them.
Wow,
thank you for writing this review. I have been clamoring for a Honduran restaurant since I discovered pupusas several years ago. There's a phenomenal place in Chattanooga that is Honduran. I can hardly wait to try it out. Maybe Knoxville will finally begin to get a little diversity instead of just a diversity of chains.
I like Anthony and the Johnsons, but people who I've played his music for have compared him to Tiny Tim and have seemed dismissive. You chose a difficult almum to review and did as good a job as could be done. I'd want to give it a listen after reading your column.
What a wonderfully written article. I enjoyed it immensely. The Bijou and the Tennessee two of Knoxville's best treasures. I've enjoyed many shows at the Bijou, but none before the current renovation. I especially enjoyed hearing about a number of performances that stood out for you.
Looks like a good lineup and thanks for posting about it. BTW, how appropriate for our local celebration to include "We Shall Overcome" since it was co-written by east Tennessean Guy Carawan.
My own top 10, in no particular order and nothing local. Echoing Wayne's comments, I only regret that I cannot listen to more music to round out my list, but here's mine:1) Del McCoury & Friends - Moneyland2) Danny O'Keefe - In Time3) Phil Roy - The Great Longing4) A J Roach - Revelation5) Karine Polwart - This Earthly Spell6) James Hunter - The Hard Way7) Gandalf Murphy & The - The Great UnravelSlambovian Circus of Dreams8) Kensington Prairie - Captured In Still Life9) Albert Castiglia - These Are The Days10) Ry Cooder - I, Flathead
Great article and I look forward to trying this place. Powell is in desperate need of some restaurant action and this looks like a good opportunity to get started.
